Recently I had the opportunity to be a Keynote speaker and do machine learning, deep learning workshop at the 5th South American International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) in Bogotá, Colombia. The event brought together experts and professionals dedicated to advancing the discipline of industrial engineering and operations management around the globe.

The title of my talk was “Unraveling Machine Learning & Deep Learning: From Data to Intelligence”. In it, we explored how machine learning and deep learning are revolutionizing industries by turning vast amounts of data into actionable intelligence.

IEOM started it’s journey in 2011. Its mission is to promote critical thinking and networking in IE and OM worldwide, particularly in emerging countries. The society values diversity, inclusion, professional development, and sustainability. Their platform serves to inspire dialogue and innovative thinking, often leading to collaborations and solutions benefitting economies worldwide. What impresses me most about IEOM is its ability to foster talent development, and support communities particularly in emerging economies in the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management space.

After the conference, I took some time to explore the vibrant city of Bogotá and Colombia’s ancient and captivating culture. The historical richness of the city left a lasting impression on me. Highlights of my visit included:

  • Monserrate: This iconic mountain offers breathtaking city views and is a must-visit for travelers in Bogotá.
  • Gold Museum (Museo del Oro): This museum houses an extensive collection of pre-Hispanic gold artifacts and is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Colombia.
  • Botero Artworks (Museo Betero): The works of renowned artist Fernando Botero, known for his unique style of depicting people and objects with exaggerated proportions, were truly fascinating to witness in person.

Being a part of this conference was an unforgettable experience. With the advent of our new technology today we are standing at the dawn of a world that is yet to be imagined. We have the responsibility to ensure that the people who produce these technologies will use them ethically for making our world healthier and safer for all human kind.
